Adopt an Apartment

| 7 Comments | No TrackBacks

UBH's Adopt an Apartment program was featured in the LA Times!

Families often come to our program with few personal possessions.  With your generous support and help, we are able to transform empty apartments into welcoming homes.

When adopting an Apartment at Family Place in Santa Monica, adopters are adopting an apartment which will house one family. A family typically stays in their apartment at Family Place from 9 months to 1 year.

The Adopt-An-Apartment program consists of three components:

(1) fundraising

(2) purchasing the household items

(3) making over the apartment

Adopters spend approximately $1,000-$1,500 to fully equip an apartment each time a new family enters our program. Big furniture items are not needed. Please see list below.

We are happy to provide you with a tax receipt for all purchases related to the apartment makeover.  Please note that Upward Bound House will not provide reimbursements for items you purchase (ie. please don't write us a check, and then ask us to write you a check).

Typically, an individual or a group of volunteers will spend several hours shopping for the items, and then a few hours to complete the actual apartment 'make over.'  We will coordinate with you to give you as much lead time as possible about the needed make-over date, typically about 10 days in advance. Sometimes we don't know the incoming family's profile until a week in advance.

We appreciate your flexibility! Makeovers are best done Monday-Friday, 9:00am-8:00pm as we only have a skeleton staff on weekends, but if weekends are the only option, we will accommodate you.

**Everything you install into the apartment, your family will be taking with them when they move out to permanent housing!

Below is the list of items that each new family entering our program typically needs. Items with a * next to them are "suggested". UBH provides the beds, eating table & chairs, drawers, microwave and a fridge. There is not enough space to add large furniture items such as coffee tables, and end tables. But we encourage our volunteers to add special touches, details and warmth to an apartment with decorative items such as decorative bathroom and kitchen items, pottery, books or flowers.

Please note that we seek only new items with regards to bedding, towels, kitchen items and if you choose, clothing.  In order to keep apartment walls looking like new, we ask that no holes be made in the walls to hang items such as mirrors and picture frames, but you can hang peel-off, paint friendly decals.  However, please check with us first if you'd like to use adhesives on the walls. Lastly, please be aware that candles and wall paint/wallpaper are prohibited in the apartments.

We are deeply appreciative of your support!  You play a crucial role in making the families feel welcomed into their new home, so thank you for being an Adopter. Feel free to contact Krystle Ruiz ( with questions and/or suggestions about the program. I look forward to hearing from you.
