On Saturday May 19th, Yoga Vista Studio and Upward Bound House came together to fight family homelessness with a special yoga fundraiser - Power in the Park.
Approximately 50 people came to the event, held in Playa Vista's scenic Concert Park. Attendees were able to learn about the crisis of family homelessness and many were introduced to Upward Bound House for the first time. "We're thankful that Power in the Park provided us with such a unique opportunity to share more about what we do, as well as raise funds for our great cause!" said Tara Doran, Co-President of Upward Bound House's Young Professionals Board. Tara and fellow Co-President Erin Tanaka addressed the crowd and raffle prizes were given away before everyone took part in the yoga class, taught by instructor Jamie Horgan. The event was closed by fellow instructor Linda Baffa with a special a capella rendition of Over the Rainbow.
This donation-based event is held the third Saturday of every month, benefiting various local charities. Keary Ann Bixby, owner of Yoga Vista Studio, began Power in the Park in October in an effort to give back to the local community. Yoga instructors from all over Los Angeles come to teach and a different charity is benefited each time. On May 19th, $400 was raised and 100% of all proceeds from this event were donated to Upward Bound House.
Upward Bound House has a mission to eliminate homelessness among families with children in Los Angeles by providing housing, supportive services and advocacy. Since 1997, nearly 500 families - including over 1,000 children - have graduated from Upward Bound House and are no longer homeless. According to recent data, over 6,000 children are homeless on any given night in Los Angeles.
